The next generation of BlueTech companies

San Diego is a well-known hub of innovation in a desert city on one of the most beautiful bays in the world. With a booming tech industry, world-class academic institutions, and incredible weather, it is no wonder that it is home to the largest organized BlueTech cluster in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world.

BlueTech to us includes innovative ocean and water/wastewater technologies and services - as we say, “everything wet.” BTI is focused on helping BlueTech entrepreneurs to create successful companies. Our goal is to help drive sustainable economic growth in the San Diego region while solving some of Earth's greatest challenges.

At BTI, we seek to inspire, empower, and ignite the passions of entrepreneurs. We provide mentors, insights to the industry, and connections to potential partners around the globe.

Innovation is about developing technologies and services that can address future challenges and opportunities. It is about harnessing ideas…and breaking down barriers between researchers, entrepreneurs, & policy makers.

Water enables life on Earth. Humans can survive weeks without food, but only three days without water. The UN Water Action Decade (2018-2028) and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) were adopted to mobilize the scientific community, policy-makers, business and civil society around a program of joint research and technological innovation. BTI is aligned with these goals.

In July of 2017, Clear Blue Sea joined the Blue Tech Incubator. As a startup non-profit with minimal funding, use of the corporate office space and conference rooms accelerated the establishment of our management infrastructure, including our Board of Directors, Nonprofit legal designation, and Organizational Structure.

Through the incubator we met many people who supported our mission of cleansing the oceans of plastic pollution and our solution of a solar-powered marine robot to perform plastic garbage collection in the ocean gyres. Many of these folks have since joined our Board of Directors and Strategic Advisory Group to help achieve early engineering and designs for our “Floating Robot for Eliminating Debris”, or FRED. With the help of the SD Foundation’s financial support to TMA for student internships, Clear Blue Sea has benefited from the funding of 7 interns from UCSD, USD, SDSU, PLNU, and local high schools.

The Maritime Alliance’s BlueTech Incubator program is a great opportunity for startup companies. This vibrant program helps companies to better understand the BlueTech industry, form synergy, and create mutually beneficial collaborations. BTI is also strategically located at Dentons’ La Jolla office; this allows BTI members to receive invaluable legal advice — an important feature that is often unavailable at other incubator programs.

Since joining the BTI program, our company has benefited tremendously from TMA’s enormous network in the BlueTech industry, both in the States and abroad. These opportunities have broadened our horizon to understand what is possible. BTI has helped us to critically evaluate our approaches within the company as well as our strategies for different market segments.
